Kenyans Mark Big Day in Style.

UK Kenyans ushered in the new constitution with song and dance at the Holiday Inn London’s Regents Park, cheering faithfully as the national anthem was played. One after the other speakers urged for Kenyans in the Diaspora to cease the opportunity and help re-build Kenya.

The Promulgation party hosted by Kenya's mission in the UK, had the chief guest, Kenya High Commissioner HE Ephraim Ngare reading the president's speech before praising the Diaspora for its contribution to Kenya's Economy.

Dr Masanga, a Ugandan political activist and moderator based in London praised Kenya for setting the precedent for peaceful elections. He noted, that “East Africans have always looked up to Kenya, for refuge, protection as well as business. A peaceful KENYA therefore is crucial for Africa and especially the horn of Africa region.”

Ms. Agnes Gitau speaking to Kass FM and KLN praised ordinary Kenyans who took the initial peaceful initiatives, and continued to work hard and pay taxes despite the crisis.  “The world witnessed ordinary Kenyans defy the political class and overwhelmingly and peacefully vote for the new law, to give us in the Diaspora a chance to be dual nationals.”dance2

Agnes celebrates the end of cheap politics that has ruined KENYA, “We can be someone; we can be part of this process because we are Kenyans, not because of status quo. Ms Agnes praised Kenyans who had sacrificed so much to make these reforms a reality. In the UK, she commended Kenya Movement for Democracy and Justice UK (KMDJ), a lobby group whose primary objective was to see constitutional reforms in Kenya.

Kenyans_-kln_2Agnes told Kass FM, that it was pointless to dance and drink here without acknowledging the hard work of activists such as Ng'ethe wa Mbiyu and Sam Ochola in particular. “These are people who were not afraid to speak out and fight for reforms.” She added.

Celebrations in Kenya

In a ceremony full of military pomp and pageantry, Kenyans packed Nairobi's Uhuru Park – popularly referred to as ‘Freedom Park’, to witness their leaders take fresh oaths under the first overhaul of the charter since 1963.

"I am here to witness the rebirth of our nation. It has been 40 years since our first constitution was made, this is a new dawn because we will realise development and the rights of Kenyans will be respected. It's a happy day for Kenyans," said Charles Oduor in the heaving crowd.

East Africa's largest economy endorsed the document in a peaceful referendum early August 2010, as one of the reforms agreed upon to end months of murderous violence that engulfed the country following a disputed presidential election at the end of 2007.

"No one could have thought that out of the bitter harvest of the disputed election and the violence that pitted our people against each other just two years ago, we would be witnessing today the re-birth of a national unity that has eluded us for more than 40 years," Prime Minister Raila Odinga said to constant cheering.

The new document paves way for new counties, which will enjoy some autonomy and a share of the national budget, aimed at encouraging development in rural Kenya, where the majority of people live a subsistence lifestyle.

The normally dusty streets of the capital were swept clean for the occasion, and some closed to traffic to allow a parade of battle tanks and military hardware.

"Today is historic," said Dickson Orandi, holding his 18-month son Shadrack with whom he had been standing for hours. "When he grows up he can say that he was in Nairobi on that great day.
